DEPRESSION IN BIPOLAR OR UNIPOLAR DISORDERS

Major Signs & Symptoms Major Depression Dysthymia
  • Sadness, emptiness, and/or tearfulness
    (Children and adolescents may be irritable instead.)

  • Significantly decreased interest or pleasure in all or nearly all of your usual activities
    (Subjective or observed by others.)

  • Decreased energy/fatigue

  • Sleeping significantly more or less than usual

  • Decrease or increase in appetite and/or loss or gain of more than five percent of body weight within a month without dieting
    (Children may not weigh enough to meet expected standards.)

  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions

  • Slowed body movements, or an increase in nonproductive, repetitious actions (fidgeting, hand wringing, pulling on clothes or hair, etc.)
    (Must be observed by others.)

  • Feelings of worthlessness, or excessive or inappropriate guilt
    (Not just because you’re depressed.)

  • Suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts
